I especially got the 2+2 makes 5 argument。 It kinda got "gruesome" for me lang when Julia entered the scene, but I am reminded that people right now nga wants that kind of "hunger", and they are willing to break laws and lose themselves just for the sake of it。 I also loved the buildup for O'Brien, I never thought his character would be major in the end—I thought he was an ally all along! I'm listing down the things I got from this book! - For whom, it suddenly occurred to him to wonder, was he writing this diary? For the future, for the unborn。- How could you communicate with the future? Either the future would resemble the present, in which case to would not listen to him, or it would be different from it, and his predicament would be meaningless。- Thoughtcrime was not a thing that could be concealed forever。 You might dodge successfully for a while, even for years, but sooner or later they were bound to get you。 It was always at night—the arrests invariably happened at night。 - *This line gave me goosebumps! I'm reminded of the Drug War in the Philippines*- On coins, on stamps, on the covers of books, on banners, on posters, and on the wrapping of a cigarette packet—everywhere。 Always the eyes watching you and the voice enveloping you。 Asleep or awake, working or eating, indoors or out of doors, in the bath or in bed—no escape。- How could you make appeal to the future when not a trace of you, not even an anonymous word scribbled on a piece of paper, could physically survive?- This process of continuous aliteration was applied not only to newspapers, but to books, periodicals, pamphlets, posters, leaflets, films, sound tracks, cartoons, photographs—to every kind of literature or documentation which might conceivably hold any political or idealogical significance。- Even the slogans will change。 How could you have a slogan like "freedom is slavery" when the concept of freedom has been abolished。- I understand how, I do not understand why。- Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four。 If that is granted, all else follows。- I think I exist, I am conscious of my own identity。 I was born, and I shall die。 I have arms and legs。 I occupy a particular point in space。 No other solid object can occupy the same point simultaneously。- You will work for a while, you will be caught, you will confess, then you will die。 Those are the only results that you will ever see。 We shall take part in it as handfuls of dust and splinters of bone。 But how far away that future may be, there is no knowing。 It might be a thousand years。 At present nothing is possible except to extend the area of sanity little by little。 We cannot act collectively。 We can only spread our knowledge outwards from individual to individual。 generation after generation。- The aim of the High is to remain where they are。 The aim of the Middle is to change places with the High。 The aim of the Low when they have an aim—for it is an abiding characteristic of the Low that they are too much crushed by drudgery to be more than intermittently conscious of anything outside their daily lives—is to abolish all distinctions and create a society in which all men shall be equal。 They are then overthrown by the Middle, who enlist the Low on their side by pretending to them that they are fighting for liberty and justice。 As soon as they have reached their objective, the Middle thrust the Low back into their old position of servitude, and themselves become the High。 Of the three groups, only the Low are never even temporarily successful in achieving their aim。- Inequality was the price of civilization。- The past is whatever the records and the memories agree upon。 And since the Party is in full control of all records, and in equally full control of the minds of its members, it follows that the past is whatever the Party chooses to make it。 Though the past is alterable, it never has been altered in any specific instance。 For when it has been re-created in whatever shape is needed at the moment, then this new version is the past, and no different past can ever have existed。 。。。more Very wordy and not the easiest to read but it made me feel smart。 The book is slow paced and dare I say boring at the start。 The characters lack depth and having to read Winston’s internal monologue bored me。 I would describe him as beige, his perception of the society he lives in is far from revolutionary。 Nothing really happens for the first 2/3 of the book but the end compensated for this。 Overall definitely worth the read。 pretty good book!!! very harrowing from start to finish, but intensifies as you get to the end。 seeing winston’s character development (and i guess eventual regression) was at the same time a treat as it was hard to watch。 This is the first "classic" dystopian I read, and it propelled me to seek more of this gender。 After reading We, Brave New World, The Handmaid's Tale, and Fahrenheit 451, I can safely say that this is tied with The Handmaid's Tale as the best-written dystopian book。 It's fair to say that many plot points are unoriginal and directly stolen from We, but this doesn't take away from this book's merit in atmosphere building。Instead of the glass city seen on We, 1984 is settled in a typical "socialist This is the first "classic" dystopian I read, and it propelled me to seek more of this gender。 After reading We, Brave New World, The Handmaid's Tale, and Fahrenheit 451, I can safely say that this is tied with The Handmaid's Tale as the best-written dystopian book。 It's fair to say that many plot points are unoriginal and directly stolen from We, but this doesn't take away from this book's merit in atmosphere building。Instead of the glass city seen on We, 1984 is settled in a typical "socialist land," which is much more alive in some parts and dead in the other ones; it is not a sterile world (unlike We) and it feels real。The story and characters are decent, but the best thing the book does is replicate the feeling of being repressed。 The INGSOC party is the real star here, the structure of the state and all of its moving parts make this world feel unique, and carry out the message against totalitarianism。At the end of the day, Orwell wrote a good book that keeps shouting an important message that every human being under a state should be aware of。 。。。more Read this one last summer to understand why 2+2=5。 Creepy。 Having been written in the late 1940s, 1984 might have seemed so unrealistic and far-fetched as it depicts a world where all we do, think, or say is somehow tracked。 The illusion of freedom would only exist so long as no attempt of going against the rules is made。 The more I read it, the more I realized such world is in certain ways not that different from what it foresaw when it was written。At times it made me feel hopeless, and reflect upon on how much resemblance there is with what's going on Having been written in the late 1940s, 1984 might have seemed so unrealistic and far-fetched as it depicts a world where all we do, think, or say is somehow tracked。 The illusion of freedom would only exist so long as no attempt of going against the rules is made。 The more I read it, the more I realized such world is in certain ways not that different from what it foresaw when it was written。At times it made me feel hopeless, and reflect upon on how much resemblance there is with what's going on in the world, however, it really depends on us to change the path that makes us live a better ending。In spite of it all, I really enjoyed the reading and would definitely recommend it。 4。5 stars rounded up to 5。 。。。more

Among the seminal texts of the 20th century, Nineteen Eighty-Four is a rare work that grows more haunting as its futuristic purgatory becomes more real。 Published in 1949, the book offers political satirist George Orwell's nightmare vision of a totalitarian, bureaucratic world and one poor stiff's attempt to find individuality。 The brilliance of the novel is Orwell's prescience of modern life--the ubiquity of television, the distortion of the language--and his ability to construct such a thorough version of hell。 Required reading for students since it was published, it ranks among the most terrifying novels ever written。

What a book! WAR IS PEACE。 FREEDOM IS SLAVERY。 IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH。 That slogan has been stuck in my head ever since I began reading the novel。 I tend to avoid dystopian novels (I'm not the genre's biggest fan), but this one was a must and I'm glad I read it。 The fact that George Orwell published this in 1949 is simply unbelievable because this futuristic dystopia seems kind of where we are headed (which is scary)。 Although many aspects of Orwell's context and reality can be seen in the novel, What a book! literally nothing to say about this book that hasn’t already been said, but it was a weird time to be reading it, but there probably hasn’t been any stretch of time since it’s came out that hasn’t been a weird time to read it。 which is also saying something that society has held this book and it’s symbolism so closely but seemingly have learned nothing as we are still able to relate it so closely to modern day

Very nice book that give you thoughts about today's society。 Very good food for thought。 Orwell was ahead of his time! It terrified me even back in Grade 10 or 11 1972 - 1973 when we read this。 I think George Orwell may indeed have been clairvoyant。 Or a time traveller。。。 how else could he know - ??? And here it is 2022 and a lot of what he wrote about is actually here and now。

Legendary for a reason。 A terrifying, often accurate account of a totalitarian future。 Brilliant, and as with a lot of dystopian fiction, terrifying。

I loved this book! It's my first time reading something of this genre, and it got me。 It's so heavy and disturbing in such a good + subtle way, and I learned a lot。 It's written in 1950, as a "prediction" daw of what will happen in 1984 and the present。 It's like a warning of the signs to watch out for! I especially got the 2+2 makes 5 argument。 It kinda got "gruesome" for me lang when Julia entered the scene, but I am reminded that people right now nga wants that kind of "hunger", and they are I loved this book! I'm reminded of the Drug War in the Philippines*- On coins, on stamps, on the covers of books, on banners, on posters, and on the wrapping of a cigarette packet—everywhere。 Always the eyes watching you and the voice enveloping you。 Asleep or awake, working or eating, indoors or out of doors, in the bath or in bed—no escape。- How could you make appeal to the future when not a trace of you, not even an anonymous word scribbled on a piece of paper, could physically survive?- This process of continuous aliteration was applied not only to newspapers, but to books, periodicals, pamphlets, posters, leaflets, films, sound tracks, cartoons, photographs—to every kind of literature or documentation which might conceivably hold any political or idealogical significance。- Even the slogans will change。 How could you have a slogan like "freedom is slavery" when the concept of freedom has been abolished。- I understand how, I do not understand why。- Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four。 If that is granted, all else follows。- I think I exist, I am conscious of my own identity。 I was born, and I shall die。 I have arms and legs。 I occupy a particular point in space。 No other solid object can occupy the same point simultaneously。- You will work for a while, you will be caught, you will confess, then you will die。 Those are the only results that you will ever see。 We shall take part in it as handfuls of dust and splinters of bone。 But how far away that future may be, there is no knowing。 It might be a thousand years。 At present nothing is possible except to extend the area of sanity little by little。 We cannot act collectively。 We can only spread our knowledge outwards from individual to individual。 generation after generation。- The aim of the High is to remain where they are。 The aim of the Middle is to change places with the High。 The aim of the Low when they have an aim—for it is an abiding characteristic of the Low that they are too much crushed by drudgery to be more than intermittently conscious of anything outside their daily lives—is to abolish all distinctions and create a society in which all men shall be equal。 They are then overthrown by the Middle, who enlist the Low on their side by pretending to them that they are fighting for liberty and justice。 As soon as they have reached their objective, the Middle thrust the Low back into their old position of servitude, and themselves become the High。 Of the three groups, only the Low are never even temporarily successful in achieving their aim。- Inequality was the price of civilization。- The past is whatever the records and the memories agree upon。 And since the Party is in full control of all records, and in equally full control of the minds of its members, it follows that the past is whatever the Party chooses to make it。 Though the past is alterable, it never has been altered in any specific instance。 For when it has been re-created in whatever shape is needed at the moment, then this new version is the past, and no different past can ever have existed。 。。。more

Very wordy and not the easiest to read but it made me feel smart。 The book is slow paced and dare I say boring at the start。 The characters lack depth and having to read Winston’s internal monologue bored me。 I would describe him as beige, his perception of the society he lives in is far from revolutionary。 Nothing really happens for the first 2/3 of the book but the end compensated for this。 Overall definitely worth the read。

pretty good book!!! very harrowing from start to finish, but intensifies as you get to the end。 seeing winston’s character development (and i guess eventual regression) was at the same time a treat as it was hard to watch。

This is the first "classic" dystopian I read, and it propelled me to seek more of this gender。 After reading We, Brave New World, The Handmaid's Tale, and Fahrenheit 451, I can safely say that this is tied with The Handmaid's Tale as the best-written dystopian book。 It's fair to say that many plot points are unoriginal and directly stolen from We, but this doesn't take away from this book's merit in atmosphere building。Instead of the glass city seen on We, 1984 is settled in a typical "socialist This is the first "classic" dystopian I read, and it propelled me to seek more of this gender。 After reading We, Brave New World, The Handmaid's Tale, and Fahrenheit 451, I can safely say that this is tied with The Handmaid's Tale as the best-written dystopian book。 It's fair to say that many plot points are unoriginal and directly stolen from We, but this doesn't take away from this book's merit in atmosphere building。Instead of the glass city seen on We, 1984 is settled in a typical "socialist land," which is much more alive in some parts and dead in the other ones; it is not a sterile world (unlike We) and it feels real。The story and characters are decent, but the best thing the book does is replicate the feeling of being repressed。 The INGSOC party is the real star here, the structure of the state and all of its moving parts make this world feel unique, and carry out the message against totalitarianism。At the end of the day, Orwell wrote a good book that keeps shouting an important message that every human being under a state should be aware of。 。。。more

Having been written in the late 1940s, 1984 might have seemed so unrealistic and far-fetched as it depicts a world where all we do, think, or say is somehow tracked。 The illusion of freedom would only exist so long as no attempt of going against the rules is made。 The more I read it, the more I realized such world is in certain ways not that different from what it foresaw when it was written。At times it made me feel hopeless, and reflect upon on how much resemblance there is with what's going on Having been written in the late 1940s, 1984 might have seemed so unrealistic and far-fetched as it depicts a world where all we do, think, or say is somehow tracked。 The illusion of freedom would only exist so long as no attempt of going against the rules is made。 The more I read it, the more I realized such world is in certain ways not that different from what it foresaw when it was written。At times it made me feel hopeless, and reflect upon on how much resemblance there is with what's going on in the world, however, it really depends on us to change the path that makes us live a better ending。In spite of it all, I really enjoyed the reading and would definitely recommend it。 4。5 stars rounded up to 5。 。。。more
